Cloudy volcano
Today we arrived at Monteverde where we’ll stay for the next two nights.
The last two days we stayed near the volcano Arenal. Arenal is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and has eruptions all the time. From the hotel one would have a nice view up to the top of the volcano and at night one could see the lava at the active side of the Arenal. Since it was all the time cloudy at the top we couldn’t see that.
On Friday after our short visit to the village La Fortuna we went back to the hotel and took a bath in the hot springs. Thanks to the volcano this area has a lot of hot springs. On Saturday we where supposed to take a hike through the rain forest to a point where we could see the volcano. We changed our planes as it was very cloudy in the morning and took a drive. We found a little snake and reptile zoo where they also had a butterfly garden. It was good that all the snakes where inside because it started to rain as we where there. We had a private tour with a very good guide and the butterfly garden was much better then the one in La Paz. The variety of butterflies was much bigger and since only we where there it wasn’t crowded at all. After the zoo we went back to the hotel because we still had to take our hike that we changed to the afternoon. The hike was also a private tour. We walked through the primary rain forest where we saw some spider monkeys and some nice birds we haven’t seen before. During this hike we could hear the eruptions of Arenal and the lava rocks coming down the hill. At the end of the hike we could a nice view of the lower part of Arenal because the clouds didn’t clear up. It was still impressive because we could see the rocks rolling or better flying down the side of the volcano.
Today we drove from La Fortuna to Monteverde. The last 40 km where on rough road but most of the road was much better then the one to Boco Tabata. Tomorrow we’ll take a tour through the cloud forest at Monteverde and in the afternoon we’ll walk through the treetops on hanging bridges.
The Arenal volcano.
